I love this story and your old camp pic! The magenta halter dress you found is really pretty. I often thrift for my boys, but I haven't ventured into looking for myself (just trying to wear allll clothes I already own!), maybe I'll try it soon. πŸ’—

Clothes for me are definitely hit or miss, but it’s always a nice surprise when I find something I love (I find so much good stuff for my boys though)!

Love this and all the treasures you’ve found! And the old picture from camp! Amazing!!! I love thrifting. Here it’s not great for clothes, but it is amazing for house stuff. You can buy vintage clothes, but it’s pricier. I don’t why anyone would be reluctant toward buying or wearing secondhand. When my youngest was in kindergarten, a classmate complimented her dress and asked where she got it (at age 5?!). She very proudly replied, β€œA box in the attic.” (Meaning a hand-me-down from her sisters.) The girl wrinkled her nose and said she didn’t like it after all. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« 🀣

I also live the footnote stories about your dad and grandma! Lol! My granddad also loved thrifting/ garage sale-ing.

My kids closets are 90% hand me down or thrifted! I don’t get looking down on it either β€” I think our society is conditioned into believing consumerism is the goal!

So true!

Have up on thrifting a while ago because I never had any luck, but you’ve inspired me to give it another try!

Laura Bass's avatar

I find I have the best luck when I can go to the same store semi-regularly, because I learn where to look! I hope you score some great finds when you give it another try!!

I’m not a big thrifter but I loved reading about your finds and your family history. That green dress is perfect!!

Laura Bass's avatar

Thanks, Alyssa! It was fun to share some of my finds!

The pink dress is GORGEOUS on you! I'm obsessed with your miniature tea set. I want to play with it! :) The stories about your grandmother are hilarious. It's fun that you have the thrifting bug, too!

Laura Bass's avatar

Thanks, Laura! The tea set was a really fun findβ€”why are things so much more fun when they are miniature versions of things?

I really like thrifting too! I went thru a big facebook marketplace phase to combine the online shopping urge with the desire to shop sustainably and find more unique things, especially when the kids were younger. Nothing beats that feeling of searching for something for a long time and FINALLY finding it!!

Laura Bass's avatar

Yes! Finding one of the things you’ve been searching for is the best feeling! I love browsing fb marketplace, too!

β€œI didn’t think about what I was losing when I gained convenience.” Ooff, that hit home. I get overwhelmed by traditional thrift stores, but I love estate sales and antique stores. It also brings back memories with my grandma (your stories made me LOL)!

Laura Bass's avatar

I’ve never been to an estate sale but I really want to venture into trying them out too!

I love the story of your grandmother! I enjoy thrifting, but it’s just like you named.. how often convenience wins. You have so many great thrifted finds! Love the pink dress especially! I have a couple bags of things that I need to take to my thrift store.. maybe I can carve out time for a little browsing too.

Laura Bass's avatar

Thanks, Kristina! I think browsing the thrift store should be your reward to yourself for getting the donations dropped off!!

You have some really awesome finds. That camo dress!

I enjoyed this read and I loathe thrifting πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ but my daughter who is 18 LOVES thrifting. She’s been thrifting for a few years. When I go with her inside I’m absolutely falling apart but it’s quality time with her. She finds some very good deals.

Laura Bass's avatar

I love that you still go with your daughter for the quality time even though it isn’t your favorite thing!

I was about to go online and order a small outdoor side table, but maybe I'll see what I can find at thrift stores first. πŸ˜‰

Laura Bass's avatar

If you aren’t a member of a Buy Nothing group, you should check that out, too! I’ve gotten some great things through there (including a coffee table and a film camera)… you never know what someone might be giving away!

Jessie's avatar

I am, though I don't check frequently enough to catch the good stuff!

Laura Bass's avatar

Things do go fast on there, but every now and then I luck out!

I loved reading this post! Thrifting is the best! I also love my local Facebook mom’s page, which is basically thrifting, but online and in my neighborhood. I think my best find has been Vince flats for $10. So much good stuff out there! The exhale retreat needs to have a thrifting date on the artist agenda!

Laura Bass's avatar

The flats are a great find! I love our local BST groups too. And yes, a thrifting date at the exhale retreat would be so fun!

Love this! This quote definitely hit: β€œI didn’t think about what I was losing when I gained convenience.” So true!! I love perusing my local thrift stores or visiting new ones when I’m out of the area. Though i def prefer it without kids haha

Laura Bass's avatar

Oh yes, it’s way better when you can go solo! Though my kids do love going with me!

ashley danielle's avatar

My kids do too!! They make a beeline to the books and toys hah. As long as I don’t have something I’m specifically looking for, bringing them along is fun. They pick up things I wouldn’t expect (for better or worse πŸ˜…)

Laura Bass's avatar

Yes, it’s always fun to see what they find! Mine have picked out some games that ended up being a lot of fun. My favorite thrift store has a big table full of small toys from happy meals and that kind of thing, and my kids could spend HOURS looking through those!

Love this! Thrifting has been a game changer for me. I love walking in and moving toward what I love without concern for whether or not it's "in." My wardrobe is now 90% thrifted and I love it!

Laura Bass's avatar

Yes! There is such freedom in not worrying about what’s in and just going for what you likeβ€”and thrift stores have such a great variety to choose from!
